POSITION SUMMARY

JustUs Health’s mission is to work for equitable health care access and outcomes for people who experience injustice at the intersection of health status and identity. We center individuals and communities at risk of and living with HIV or facing barriers to equitable health care access and outcomes because of their identity as racial, sexual, and/or gender minorities.

JustUs Health is seeking new individual members for their Board of Directors. JustUs Health directors serve a three-year term. Individuals with lived experience or a passion towards our target populations (Lesbian/Gay/Bi/MSM/Queer, Transgender, African American, multi-racial communities that are disproportionately impacted by HIV, HIV positive people, and those engaging in risk behaviors for HIV in individual and group settings) are encouraged to apply.

EXPECTATIONS OF THE BOARD AS A WHOLE

The Board of Directors determines the strategic direction and associated policies for JustUs Health, and the Chief Executive Officer implements these policies on a day-to-day basis. Management is the province of the Executive Director; however, the Board is ultimately accountable for the overall effectiveness of the organization.

The Board of Directors of JustUs Health takes responsibility for five basic functions:

Administration: Sets policies and provides oversight for their implementation. Ensures adherence to mandates - legal and otherwise - that apply to JustUs Health.
Finance: Ensures that JustUs Health has the necessary financial resources to operate effectively. Approves an annual budget and monitors adherence for fiscal soundness.
Human Resources: Makes sure JustUs Health has the necessary human resources. Specifically, the Board hires and supervises the Chief Executive Officer and provides the support needed to maintain qualified staff. Oversees human resource practices that are fair and equitable.
Strategic Planning: Develops the vision, mission, and strategic goals and objectives for JustUs Health and monitors programs and services for currency, relevance, and effectiveness.
Public and Community Relations: Advocates for JustUs Health in the communities it serves and to the public as a whole. Acts to enhance JustUs Health's public image and facilitate good relationships with other community organizations and agencies.

EXPECTATIONS OF INDIVIDUAL BOARD MEMBERS

Serve a three-year board term and may be elected to one subsequent term for a total of six consecutive years
Know and support the organization’s mission, policies, programs, and needs
Faithfully read and understand the organization’s financial statements
Serve as active advocates and ambassadors for the organization and fully engage in identifying and securing the financial resources and partnerships necessary for JustUs Health to advance its mission
Leverage connections, networks, and resources to develop collective action to fully achieve JustUs Health’s mission
Give a meaningful personal financial donation to the best of their ability
Help identify personal connections that can benefit the organization’s fundraising and reputational standing, and can influence public policy
Prepare for, attend, and conscientiously participate in at least 80% of board meetings per year whether in person or through remote communications

BOARD MEMBERS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO

Follow the organization’s bylaws, policies, and board resolutions
Sign an annual conflict-of-interest disclosure and update it during the year if necessary, as well as disclose potential conflicts before meetings and actual conflicts during meetings
Maintain confidentiality about all internal matters of JustUs Health
Attend monthly evening board meetings and one monthly committee meeting

Highly creative in nature
Excellent communication and networking skills
Responsible and organized
Demonstrated leadership qualities
Experience with or member of JustUs Health’s target populations (Gay/Bi/MSM/Queer, Transgender, African American, multi-racial communities that are disproportionately impacted by HIV, HIV positive people, and those engaging in risk behaviors for HIV in individual and group settings)

SALARY

JustUs Health board of directors serve without salary or other remuneration.
