Minnesota Music Coalition

The mission of the Minnesota Music Coalition is to connect and support Minnesota’s diverse community of musicians. We do this through workshops, networking events, booking and referral connections for performance opportunities, a mentorship program, free legal consulting, vendor discounts, an annual MN Music Summit, and an annual Caravan du Nord statewide tour.

Arts, Culture and Humanities

MMC seeks individuals invested in supporting the wellbeing and success of Minnesota musicians to join our Board of Directors. We are especially interested in individuals with experience in fundraising, finance, music/performing arts marketing and tourism, as well as musicians and music industry stakeholders who can build networks and connections. No previous Board experience is required.

Expectations for Board members:

Participate: Attend Board meetings (1 per month) and related committee meetings (at least 1 per month). Expectation is 80% or higher attendance throughout the year. (All meetings will be held online via Zoom.) All Board members will be required to serve on at least one working committee of the board; committee placement will be based on expertise, interest and need. Board members should support the work of MMC by regularly attending events, concerts or programs.

Invest: Make a serious commitment to participate actively in the work of the Board and its committees, to get to know colleagues on the Board, and to foster a supportive, positive atmosphere on behalf of the mission and work of MMC. Attend an initial Board orientation, and connect in the first year with your Board “buddy”.

Connect: Share the connecting and supporting resources of MMC with your musician networks. Listen in those communities to feedback and needs that can inform our program development and practices. Bring developments and opportunities in your networks to MMC for amplifying in our networks. Be willing to utilize your personal connections to people of influence and financial /other resources on behalf of MMC.

Give: Make a personally significant financial contribution to the organization every fiscal year. Our Board has no minimum contribution requirement, and every gift of every size is helpful and appreciated.

Understand: Stay informed about MMC activities, prepare for meetings, read provided materials, comment on minutes and reports, and ask questions at the board and committee level. Bring new resources or information to MMC staff and Board for collective understanding and learning.

Advocate: Include MMC board membership on resume and bio, talk about the organization with peers and friends, encouraging others to join, attend, and support the work.

The MMC is a small budget ($150-200K annually) organization with a small staff team. The Board's role is primarily governance, creating and stewarding the strategic plan. Board members do sit on Board committees, including Finance, Development, Governance, and Volunteer Engagement, and are welcome to join event planning committees or program development task forces as they arise.
