Attend board meetings that are held once a month for 1.5 hours. The board conducts a self-review in May-June and an annual retreat in January. Show up and represent YAI at shows, events, etc. YAI's participants, audiences, and families have noted that they appreciate how visible and approachable the board is in its involvement with every aspect of YAI. You can expect to commit an average of 2-6 hours per month outside of monthly meetings for governance and project duties. Commitments increase during productions and special events.
We are a governing board, though we all wear other volunteer hats, such as committee chair, event helper, box office manager. With a staff of one in place for the last year (after 14 years as an all-volunteer, founder-led organization) we are used to being hands-on, but learning to delegate and focus on governance.Barbara Deming
